Where We've Been

Days 23 Saturday May 10

  • We drove along Highway 101 (right next to the Pacific Ocean!) up to Big Sur.
  • The drive was BEAUTIFUL and also scary, and also made some of us feel like we were going to puke. :) We saw a sign that said 80 miles of switchbacks ahead. Our campground was in 60 miles, but we needed to keep going north on that road the next day. ;)
  • We stayed at Pfiefer Big Sur State Park. I booked it online w/no problemes, but when we pulled in, they told us our trailer was too long for that park! They did have an "emergency site" they'd let us stay in though, which was long enough (though not in the beautiful trees, it was in a field--it was ok though!!). We didn't have hook ups, so we had to conserve water & use the generator when I needed to defrost our meat for dinner in the microwave. Karry and I had foil dinners cooked over the campfire (a little bit too done) and the boys had hot dogs.
  • The HUGE redwood trees were SO pretty to camp under and the sky looked huge. There were fun critters around us...Karry went on a little hike with the boys, where they encountered 3 baby skunks!! One lifted it's little tail end into the air and Karry got the boys out of there!
  • We met a couple from Holland and their 2.5 year old daughter shared her ball with our crazy boys for a bit. It was fun talking to them! We invited them over for hot chocolate that night, but they were getting ready to go back to Holland (after being here 2 years!) and it was their last night on "Holiday" and they had some things to do.

You can see a glimpse of the roads we went on. See how the mountains (hills?) go in and out? The road followed those mountains (hills?), constantly curving like that--not many pull outs for a big trailer like ours. We did pull out when we could, to let people pass, and pulled out once to use the trailer's bathroom.

A small glimpse inside our car--Isaac watching a DVD with his headphones on (so we don't have to hear it!), and feeding Ruby a bottle. He's a great big brother, giving her snacks when she needs it, singing "twinkle, twinkle little star" to calm her down, giving her toys, etc.! :)
